The Trials’ works both on an allegorical level – how will our children judge us? – and also to explore the idea that revolution and an end of democracy are likely if governments won’t meaningfully tackle climate change.

In July 2022, PixelLux worked on ‘The Trials’ at The Donmar Warehouse, a bold play by Dawn King. The play follows adults on trial for contributing to climate change and being declared guilty as climate criminals by a jury of young adults. The production team included designer Georgia Lowe, lighting designer Jai Morjaria, sound designer and composer Xana, and PixelLux for video design and engineering.
The video design used a live camera to capture defendants’ impassioned 2 minute defense and projected it onto the wall, starkly treated and programmed to reflect the characters’ inner turmoil, shifting from focusing on their face to purely their eyes as they pled with the jurors. We also used video as a tool to sharply demarcate the space and create the sense of inprisonment with projected geometry that appeared to be more in the world of lighting.
Additionally, PixelLux provided technical and design support for the practical prop of the tablet, which was crucial to driving the narrative forward. The tablet prompted the jurors to make their decision within a set time limit, adding a sense of urgency and tension to the play. The studio worked closely with the production crew to ensure the tablet was seamlessly integrated into the performance and operated smoothly throughout the show.
The visual design of the tablet also enhanced the overall aesthetic of the production, especially since the play was performed on a thrust stage, which allowed audience members to see the tablet throughout the performance.
