Faust – Mariinsky Theatre, St Petersburg

St Petersburg – April 2013

A Projection co-design with Ian Galloway for Gounod’s Faust, directed and designed by Isabella Bywater and conducted by Valery Gergiev.

Projection assumed a key role in this production, providing narrative emotional support for the music and libretto and fulfilling the scenic design. We made use of thickly textured, abstract specially painted imagery upstage that swept us with churning turmoil paralleling that of Faust’s own mental strife between locations both fantastical and banal and supported the ingeniously multifarious folding set with growing creepers, stained glass windows, shafts of moonlight and peeling wallpaper by turns.

The team consisted of a group of UK based painters and animators, art directed by Nina Dunn and Ian Galloway and a shoot crew and programmer on location in Russia, working with the local teams.

The rig was one Christie 20K projector from front of house and 4 DML1200 moving head projectors rigged onstage. The media server was catalyst, programmed via an MA Lite.
