Volpone – The Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon

Never before had I seen 21st century technology integrated so seamlessly into a Jacobean script, with Lady Politic Would-Be’s Made In Chelsea-esque documentary, and Volpone’s use of screens to futher his scam. A truly wonderful production that I would absolutely recommend to anyone who has even the tiniest interest in theatre.

Working in close collaboration with Stephen Brimson-Lewis, Nina has designed video for the RSC’s new production of Volpone, directed by Trevor Nunn.

The Ben Jonson comedy has been transposed into the 21st Century in an adaptation by Ranjit Bolt. Henry Goodman gives a colourful and masterful performance in the lead role.

This is her first show with the Royal Shakespeare Company but her second collaboration with the designer and her third show working with Tim Mitchell, who has designed the lighting.

The video provides both scenic support and narrative comment with the use of LED panels, projection across 8 outputs and 5 live camera feeds. The design also incorporates switchable film that reveals Volpone’s hoardes hidden behind a glass and aluminium wall that is also used for projection.

The video production team included Daniel English as camera assistant and Louise Rhoades-Brown as animator.

The show will run until 12th September and has been well received with a host of 4 star reviews from national press.
